Medical Facts on the Black Death

The Black Death as seen before in the previous post was spread throughout Europe leaving a lot of people dead in its presence it was a terrible outbreak for that contanent. As you may know the Black Death is also reffered to as the Bubonic Plague and the reason for that is that buboes or swelling would show up on the persons neck, in their armpit, or in the groin. The swelling was actually a tumor  and was usually the size of an egg.  Usually when purple or black spots appearded on your arms and thighs that was a sign that you would soon die and there was nothing that anybody in that time period could do. Unfortinly nobody knew that this infection was contagous and were pretty unware of any information what so ever about the infection, when it hit them it left them in a devstating shock. Even by just touching somebody's clothing who was infected you could catch the deadly infection. In result of this the infection was spread like wildfire. Something else that was very unfortnit was that the was really no curtain cure the doctors were pretty ignorant to what was going on and could only give common treatment to there patients, that they just need to sleep and eat well and it will leave, but as we know now that was not the case. No medicine was availble for this plague and that's another big reason why so many were killed by this infection. The black Death had a huge impact on Europe and anyone that survived in that time period were very lucky.

The Black Death

The Black Death was a huge epidemic in history an spread across Europe at a rapid rate. It first started in England around 1348 then carried into London that same year in September. After hitting both those areas it carried into Wales and The Midlands by the spring of 1349 and by the end of the summer of 1349 it crossed the Irish Sea and started heading north. After it went north it hit Durham in the same year of 1349 and by 1350 it had made it to Scotland. The black plague had been making it's way across all of Europe really fast leaving death in its tracks. London being one of the largest cities to get hit by this crazy infection was as a whole a complete contamination, there was really no hope, sanitation was gone. In Scotland in was falling apart as a community everyone was fighting and riots began to break out. In some areas 80- 90% of the population had died, as a country around 30- 40% of Europe had died. The plague didn't completely end until the end of the 17th century. It had left Europe in a devastating state, killing a lot of people in its path.

You may get symptoms when you have the plague and there are some ways to treat the plague after all. Some of the things that might occur to you if you were to have this disease is chills, high fevers, muscle cramps, seizures, your skin may turn to a sort of pink color as well. You generally don't feel very good, you just feel sick. You may also breath very deep and puke up blood if you have it. You will be in extreme pain during this disease as well and pretty much feel terrible. If not treated your body has a 50- 90% mortality rate. The treatment now is antibiotics and those should be given to you as soon as possible, as soon as you are witnessing symptoms within the first 24 hours. The traditional treatment recommended by medieval doctors was to eat healthy, get lots of sleep, and to not live in the environment that you were in when you were sick because they believed the air was what was causing infection. This actually did help though but it wasn't helping for the reason doctors thought, it helped because they were getting away from the bacteria that was in their infected environment. So as you can see technology has effect the way we treat infections today, and more people survive because of this.

Introduction to Plague

Plagues are started by an infection that takes place in Lympathic System, and is caused by a bacteria called Yersinia pestis. You most commonly got this by being bitten by the fleas on rodents and in some cases by caring an animal that is infected with the plague. This infection however in contagious so yes that means it spread around pretty quickly. In most cases when these huge plagues were occurring there wasn't any treatment, without treatment about 50% of the people infected died. Not to mention it destroyed populations by killing so many people. Usually within four days if your not treated you will die from the infection. However you would be surprised to know that this actually helped and turned around the European economy. This is an important topic because it shows how much the medical world has changed throughout history, how much more lives can be saved now a days, and how thankful we should be for that. I choose this topic because it interest me to know that one little flea could effect so many people. This infection has been in a lot of historical moments throughout history but I'm going to focus on one of them The Black Death.
